Description
Fort Breendonk,Breendonk,Belgium, Was considered one of the worst internment camps in Europe due to the amount of torture,disease,starvation,improper hygiene and slave labour conditions. Most of the prisoners that were transported on to Auschwitz and other works camps were so weakened that very few survived the selection process let alone beyond a few weeks in the other camps. It considered one the best examples of a camp outside of the Eastern European of ones that is still preserved.
In operation from September 20th,1940 to it's abandonment ahead of the Allied advance on October 10,1944.

Very emotive photo. I'm glad that these places are preserved to remind us of all the lives that were lost and how cruel and unreasonable we humans can be. Unfortunately, there are atrocities occurring all over the world at this very moment. This image touched that sadness in me that sometimes despairs of humanity.
